Hartford Stage today announced the artistic team for its next production in its 2021-2022 season, acclaimed playwright Pearl Cleage’s Angry, Raucous & Shamelessly Gorgeous. The smart new comedy, directed by Susan V. Booth, will take place at the Tony Award-winning theater in downtown Hartford from January 13 to February 6, 2022.

The cast includes Cynthia D. Barker (Tyler Perry’s House of Payne) as Kate, Terry Burrell (Broadway’s Into the Woods and Dreamgirls) as Anna, Shakirah DeMesier (Alliance Theater’s Angry, Raucous …) as Pete, and Marva Hicks (Broadway’s) Motown the Musical and The Lion King) as Betty. The production design team includes Collette Pollard (stage design), Kara Harmon (costume design), Michelle Habeck (lighting design), Clay Benning (sound design) and Lindsey Ewing (wig design). The production management team is made up of Anna Baranski (stage director) and Samantha Honeycutt (stage director).

In Angry, Raucous & Shamelessly Gorgeous, pioneering and compelling actress Anna Campbell returns to the United States after being in voluntary exile for 25 years. Her groundbreaking black feminist play – a controversial collection of nude performed monologues – is set to be relaunched as the centerpiece of the performance art festival in Atlanta. What promises to be both a triumphant homecoming and a much-needed career reanimation turns sour when the diva discovers that Pete, an inexperienced young woman and mature performer, is set to recreate the legendary performance of ‘Anna. Angry, Raucous & Shamelessly Gorgeous is a bold and fun story by one of America’s leading black playwrights who explores ambition, post-feminism, the generational divide, activism and who has a right to tell our stories.

Angry, Raucous & Shamelessly Gorgeous premieres January 13-19. The opening night is January 21 at 8 p.m. The production is scheduled to run until February 6 with performances Tuesday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday mornings at 2 p.m. There is a Saturday morning at 2 p.m. on January 22 and February 5. The open captioned performance is Sunday January 30 at 2 p.m. The audio-description performance will take place on Saturday 5 February at 2 p.m.
